Tom,
I used these package sources on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with great success, no
compiling needed.
jstewart at rs1:/etc/apt/sources.list.d$ cat cz_nic-labs-bird-precise.list
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/cz.nic-labs/bird/ubuntu precise main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/cz.nic-labs/bird/ubuntu precise main
