We are trying with the current 1.4.0 release.
Not having any joy compiling on Ubuntu.
Perhaps moving to FreeBSD will be the best option moving forward.

Well, which sources are you using?
MP-bgp and label support is currently not available in stock bird (however there are plans to do so).
It is basically available as net/bird_devel port on FreeBSD but you have to compile it by hand on other operating systems.
