Patch: Let "make" output be nicer

Hi everyone,

I haven't received any feedback about this patch yet.

So I wonder: Have I made any obvious mistake, that is
obvious to everybody, just not me?  If so, please be so
kind and let me know, so I can improve things.

Or is everybody just busy?
