Hi Alex,

the Debian maintainer is not the part of the core team (however he 
works for CZ.NIC,   I know we are all named Ondrej...) and he doesn't 
really think it's a good idea to mix and match upstream development 
and Debian packaging.

But the good thing is that the Debian packaging is kept in the git as 
well and can be accessed via browser at:

http://git.debian.org/?p=users/ondrej/bird.git

(there are git specific URLs for git clone access)

The packages are created using git-buildpackage tool and the 
repository is kept up-to-date with still fresh and hot upstream sources.
